Another “northern star” located in Rheinhessen, is the Braunewell estate. Countless national and international competitions certify their success and leading wine guides including The Times and wine critics such as Jancis Robinson and Robert Parker have praised their wines.
Braunewell’s Rosé and Sekt is among the best of Germany. Their Pinot Gris is said to be the best in the region. Pinot Noir and Riesling from their top sites are highly acclaimed as well.
Even though wine growing has been the family tradition at least since the 17th century, brothers Stefan and Christian Braunewell, took it to the next level.
The estate is home to some prime locations, such as the Teufelspfad (“Devil’s Path), where the climatic differences can be tasted. From the slopes that are high in lime content, the wines are fresh and tense, whereas the centre of the slope is characterized by a deep marl soil and warmer temperatures so that the wines be- come powerful and elegant. “We love to play with these differences,” Christian Braunewell says. “It’s beautiful to work on the perfect expression every year anew. We want to delight people with our wines and ourselves too, producing great products and the wine’s details.” Representing the cool North of Rheinhessen, their wines are terroir typical, mature and fruity with vibrating acidity and limestone groove.
